New Jersey Pedestrian Knockdowns
Pedestrian knockdowns are fairly common in New Jersey, with 165 pedestrians losing their lives last year after being hit by a car, truck, bus or tractor trailer. As NJ personal injury lawyers, we are far too familiar with these types of wrongful death accident lawsuits.
Our experienced New Jersey attorneys have had great success representing people hit by vehicles while walking, such as the $6 million settlement for a pedestrian seriously injured when hit by a bus.
People hit by cars, trucks and other motor vehicles are predominantly involved in accidents caused by single-vehicle crashes. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report showed that between 1997 and 2006, 90 percent of all pedestrians who died in a vehicular knockdown met their fate via a single-vehicle crash. That percentage stayed pretty much the same throughout that decade. Pedestrian deaths increased from 144 to 165 during those 10 years, which is an increase of nearly 13 percent.
Pedestrian Accidents by Area
Newark is the county seat of Essex County and the most populated city in New Jersey. It had the most pedestrian deaths from car accidents last year; Newark had 10 such accidents while all of Essex County had 20 such deaths.
In the United States, the majority of these crashes happened between 6 pm and midnight. Holidays are the most dangerous days for pedestrians. New Year’s Day is the deadliest day, and Halloween is the second deadliest with 236 and 212 respectively. Men are twice as likely to get hit and fatally injured in a knockdown. People aged 41 to 64 are also the most likely victims. They make up nearly 65 percent of the fatalities.
Some of the drivers are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, while others are distracted by their cell phones, or by texting while driving. With the increase of New Jersey drivers using their cellphones and texting while driving, pedestrians need to pay attention to what’s going on around them so they can evade an unexpected encounter with a wayward motor vehicle.
New Jersey Pedestrian Accident Lawyers
The New Jersey automobile accident attorneys at Mazie Slater Katz & Freeman fight for the rights of pedestrians who were injured in a knockdown crash. We also seek compensation for the families of those who died due to a pedestrian knockdown. We handle our business aggressively. Approximately 18 percent of the drivers responsible for fatal crashes hit and run, so we hire professionals to discover who was driving the vehicle to blame. Usually the drivers have something to hide, such as a high blood alcohol content or drug use.
It’s sad to think that a person can’t even walk down the street without risking life and limb
